WINTER IN TASSIE...

WHAT DOES A PERSON DO ?

when it's cold, foggy, raining, and windy
a lot of the time.

YEP!!!
you guessed it ...
get out the crochet hook and wool
and make
GRANNY SQUARES.

these crochet single blankets will be donated to,

'MISSION WITHOUT BORDERS'

this organisation is based in melbourne & sydney.

my friend lynda, has a knitting group that meets at her home, and these ladies knit squares for blankets.
as i am not a knitter, crochet will have to do.

the blankets will be sent to EASTERN EUROPE, then this organisation supports orphanages,& elderly people.

check out lynda blog spot to see what else she does.

this photo is the same, as the blanket draped on the lounge.
it is the only one that i have completely made.
i crocheted the 28, 10" squares.

these squares came to me, & i worked out design, sewed together, then 3 rows of double crochet around the final edge.

another lot of donated squares, that i joined together etc.
there is a bit of a colour design going on here.

the 3 blankets ready to be delivered.

i will give you instructions, in case, you also have bits of yarn and would like to make your own blanket.

make a 10" square.
use 4.00 hook.
use 8 ply wool, acrylic yarn.

you all know how it goes,
1. make 4 chain.
2. join to make a circle.
3. create your trebles into this circle.
4. etc. etc.

i needed to crochet 12 rows, that included the small middle square.

WHAT TO DO NEXT?

beanies.
yeah!
use up more wool, yarn & textured yarns.

this lot of beanies will travel with me, when i return to india in september this year.
they will roll up small in the suitcase, & will be welcomed when the winds fly across the desert from russia, into rajasthan and then into jaipur.

this beanie, will be for a baby.
hence only 4 rows.

use 8 ply wool, yarn or textured yarn.
use 4.5 hook.
need 5 blocks

1.make the 5 blocks.
4 rows for a baby.
5 rows for a child / adult.

2. join 4 blocks together, then join to form a circle.
you will notice on the block, i used on the crown, i leave the ends long.
i think this helps in seeing quickly which is the inside of the beanie.

3. form the 4 blocks into a square, & with right sides together, stitch the crown  in.

4. then i crochet 3 rows of double crochet, around the edge.
opt. use a textured yarn.

i went crazy, & couldn't stop.
especially, when i told people about the beanies, & they gave me bits of wool.

this blue beanie, has 5 rows, so this is suitable for a child / adult.

this project, has helped to pass away many hours at night ( & through the day as well)

i am having a break from beanies,
& now crocheting granny squares to make
2 x  HOT WATER BOTTLE COVERS.

my grandmother showed me how to crochet, when i was about 9 years old.
it was not easy, because,
grandma was right handed
and i am left handed.

i have this memory of being frustrated and throwing it down.

i  am very happy that i did pick it up
 &
 kept trying.

p.s. did you notice the new photo on the body of the blog.
it was taken from the lookout,
taking in the spectular panaroma of
PIRATES BAY
EAGLEHAWK NECK
TASMANIA.

about 5 minute drive from where i live.
